本套教材的体例分为正文、生词、注释、练习四个部分，书后附有参考答案；正文为完整的原文，文章的选择以题材和体裁的多样性、科学性、时代性和实用性为原则，尽量做到了难易适度，文理搭配，贴近生活，因此更符合留学生汉语学习的需要；生词部分只列出生词词性和拼音，没有做解释，这样使学生明白列出的是需要掌握的重点词，要自己理解和掌握；注释部分对文中出现的成语、俗语、惯用语等给以解释（偏重于汉文化方面），帮助了学生正确理解和使用。是一套很有特色的汉语泛读教材。
The books are composed of four sections of Texts, New Words, Notes, and Exercises (answers are included at the end of the books). The texts are complete original articles and the principles guiding the choosing of texts include being diverse, scientific, updated and practical with reasonable difficulty, covering liberal arts and science, being closely related to everyday life so as to meet the actual needs of foreign students in learning Chinese. As for the New Words and Phrases, only part of speech and pronunciation is provided without explanation, which encourages the learners to independently understand and master these key words. In the Notes, all the idioms, common sayings and phrases in the texts are explained (while focusing on Chinese culture) to help the learners to understand and use them correctly. The books can be used as Chinese extensive reading textbooks.
